Abstract: Contact Lens Coatings & Polarizations for Photosensitive Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a debilitating neurological condition that affects approximately 3.4 million people around the world, and has caused significant reduction in quality of life for many. Of this population, roughly 3% suffer from what is known as photosensitive epilepsy, where seizures are triggered by flashing lights, contrasting lights, or even dark patterns. These triggers can be something as unpredictable as glare from a reflective surface to even a flicker from a TV screen. Photosensitive Epilepsy is typically treated with oral medications and some form of light filter, like polarized sunglasses. The issue lies in the fact that some sunglasses do not cover the full range of vision, which leaves a significant room for error and can become problematic for the patients, especially when unprepared. Research has shown that polarized lenses and blue tinted lenses are clinically effective in the management of photosensitive epilepsy. By implementing both polarization and blue tints in a contact lens, our team has developed a solution that not only gives patients some relief with unpredictable triggers, but also covers the full range of vision, essentially eliminating any error that previous technology could introduce. Used conservatively, this contact lens could improve quality of life for many patients.
