Creating a successful medical device has a unique set of challenges and contradictions when compared
to consumer products. Is the consumer the patient or the provider? How do you design for a patient
that may not have the desire to use the device but is required to do so anyway? How do you create a
device that is safe and effective for the enormous range of potential users? How do you balance the
potential complexity of a device with the simplicity needed in the user experience? The answer to these
questions will vary widely depending on the device or system proposed. But one thing is for certain, to
achieve the best possible patient outcomes, the development process will require people with a diverse
set of insights, experiences, and skills.
