Ryan Steger, Ph.D.

Ryan Steger, Ph.D. is the Director of Advanced Product Development at Intuitive Surgical. For the past 9 years, Dr. Steger has helped develop multiple robotic instruments and platforms at Intuitive, including the da Vinci Xi system, the stereo endoscope for the da Vinci Xi, and the Single-Site single port access system for the da Vinci Si. Prior to Intuitive Surgical, Dr. Steger developed haptic interface technologies at Immersion Corporation (San Jose, CA) for high volume consumer products, mobile phones, and automobiles. In addition, he has served as a consultant and control system architect for projects in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Dr. Steger received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley with a focus on human machine interaction and haptics and, while there, completed the Haas Business School Management of Technology program. At Berkeley he co-invented the BLEEX human exoskeleton system, the first wearable bionic suit that enhances human ability and allows soldiers to safely carry >100 kgs over long distances and with minimal exertion. The exoskeleton technology from his thesis work is currently commercialized in parallel efforts by Ekso Bionics Corp. to enable those with lower extremity injury or paralysis to walk and by Lockheed Martin Corp. for military and industrial applications. He is a graduate from Rice University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Steger’s has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications with ASME and IEEE, and he has more than 40 issued and pending US patents.
