Abstract: The Role of Rapid POC Diagnostics in Public Health Emergencies

The COVID-19 pandemic is a unique public health emergency that has caused economic and societal damage in addition to millions of sicknesses of deaths. Mitigating the severity of this pandemic will require significant advancements and integrated efforts in vaccine development, public health education, personal hygiene, government aid, treatment options, and diagnostic testing. This talk will focus on the role of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics in controlling pandemics and reducing their adverse effects. Several emerging technologies for POC COVID-19 detection have recently received Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA. While these new devices will improve our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, other diagnostic technology gaps need to be addressed to more effectively respond to public health emergencies now and in the future.
