According to the Amputee Coalition of America, in the United States annually an estimated 185,000 people become lower limb amputees. An amputee will transition through several prosthetics in their lifetime which will cost anywhere from $5,000 - $30,000 depending on their desired range of motion. The solution to this problem has been addressed by F-Scan’s F-Socket system that utilizes pressure mapping to help doctors and engineers predict a transtibial prosthetic’s fit long term. Unfortunately, the F-Socket system is expensive and easily damaged. The goal of the team’s transtibial pressure mapping prosthetic liner project is to present research that demonstrates the device has the potential to save engineers, clinicians, and patients time and energy by offering a longer-lasting, inexpensive alternative.
